The Great Barn, Harmondsworth Barn
Explore this medieval barn on the former Manor Farm in the village of Harmondsworth, in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The Great Barn dates back to 1426 and is the architectural gem of the Colne Valley Regional Park.
Enjoy a guided tour and talk on Harmondsworth Great Barn and take a look around the historic village with a local expert: Justine, a Friend of the Great Barn of Harmondsworth. Follow on with an optional 2 mile walk on good surfaces to Harmondsworth Moor Country Park and return in the company of one of the expert country park rangers.
Rescued by English Heritage after years of neglect, this Grade I listed barn ranks alongside the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey for its exceptional architectural and historic interest.
It was dubbed the “Cathedral of Middlesex” by Sir John Betjeman.
Built in 1426 by Winchester College as part of its manor farm at Harmondsworth, the oak-framed barn is an outstanding example of medieval carpentry and contains one of the most intact interiors of its era. At nearly 60 metres long, 12 metres wide and 11 metres tall, with 13 massive oak trusses holding up the roof, both its size and aisles evoke the space and shape of a cathedral.
Managed by the Friends of the Great Barn at Harmondsworth.
Free parking available on site.
