Wildlife, Conservation and Environment

The nature conservation value of the Colne Valley is one of its greatest assets enjoyed by many visitors to the area. The richness and diversity of wildlife habitats found in the Park are the result of its underlying geology and soils, varied land uses, and the influence of social and economic factors. One of the main wildlife attractions are birds – they are often easy to observe on the lakes, particularly in the winter months. There is, of course, a variety of wildlife to see around the Park throughout the year.

Canal Activities

The Grand Union Canal runs through the Colne Valley Regional Park and is ideal for leisure cruising, boat trips and walking. For more than two centuries, it was the busiest and most important inland waterway in England, but today pleasure boats are the most familiar sight.

Cycling

There are several excellent cycling routes to choose from in the Park, including the Colne Valley Trail, a seven-mile country route linking Uxbridge with Rickmansworth. The route is shared by cyclists, walkers and horse riders and is a great way to reach a number of Country Parks. Cyclists can also use bridleways (although they must give way to pedestrians and horse riders). There is a good network throughout the Valley and are marked with blue arrows. However, many of these routes do not have a hard surface and may be muddy following heavy rainfall.

Flying

The Park is host to a couple of pilot training schools and the Denham Aerodrome, and with that comes a number of opportunities for flying.

Riding is very popular in the Colne Valley and a growing network of traffic free bridleways offer a variety of routes for riders of all ages. There are a number of stables in the Colne Valley for those who do not own their own horses.
