BUTTERFLY WALK & COUNT WITH MARTIN TAYLOR & JOHN MYNETT – WOODOAKS FARM – Saturday 27th July 11-1PM 🦋 – part of the Colne Valley Festival Fortnight.
(Please note if the weather is not suitable this walk will move to Sunday 28th – so make sure you are available for both dates)
The BIG BUTTERFLY COUNT is a UK-wide survey aimed at helping to assess the health of our environment simply by counting the amount and type of butterflies and day flying moths we see.
Woodoaks Volunteers Martin Taylor (butterfly enthusiast) and John Mynett (entomologist and moth enthusiast), will lead a two hour walk, hoping to see regular garden species such as Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Red Admiral, but also search for grassland loving species such as Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Gatekeeper and the Skippers. If you are lucky, you may see the beautiful Marbled White and perhaps the Small Heath.
Martin will also be pointing out some of the plants which are vital to the survival of butterfly species in their caterpillar stage and explaining how Woodoaks Farm & The Soil Association Land Trust are positively working to create improved butterfly habitats at Woodoaks Farm.
If weather allows John will be setting out a moth trap the night before to allow you to observe and get up close with the night time flying moths in the cool of Woodoaks 16th Century Black Barn. A wonderful chance to revel in the beauty of these creatures.
