This Colne Valley Festival Fortnight Event will be a family friendly guided walk and talk around Ruislip Lido ‘walk the planets’ trail. These are a beautiful set of panels with fascinating information about the planets which will be explained as we walk.

Date and Time: 3pm Friday 4th August (approximately 1 and a half hours)

Location: Ruislip Lido, Reservoir Road, Ruislip, HA4 7TY – meeting point :
the open-air gym half way between the Water’s Edge pub and the gated vehicle entrance to the south. See further details below.

This is a 2.4 km accessible walk, guided by one of the authors of the Walk the Planets trail: Stewart Coulter of West of London Astronomical Association. The walk will take us around the lake on a path dotted with descriptive panels of the planets at scaled distances; if sunny solar observing will be included.

Hillingdon Council approached the West of London Astronomical Society in 2016 for help setting out a series of panels on the Solar System around the perimeter of Ruislip Lido. The result is a scaled trail set out of one side of the lake.  The panels start with a 30cm Sun atop a pole with accompanying descriptive panel which includes a QR for an audio description accessible on a smart phone. Even on this scale the planets are tiny and a scaled picture is on each planet panel – if you can find it!  These plus a few extras are placed at the scaled distance.  WOLAS’s Outreach Officer was involved in the design and will guide today.  The tarmac circuit is 2.4 km in length, flat but slightly undulating and mobility scooter friendly.  The walk should take 90 min. or so.  We will meet on the grassy area behind the open-air gym situated half-way between the Water’s Edge pub and the gated entrance where the first panel is sited.  Parking (charged) is available in the car park, left off the large roundabout at the end of Reservoir Road.  Take care to avoid the pub car park, keep right when the car park splits.

Well behaved dogs on leads allowed.
